How is CHART metalworks nautical chart and map jewelry made?

Each piece is hand-cast. Your image is printed on a special coated paper, cut by hand for precision and then placed into your item. We pour layers of resin creating a dome, magnifying the image beneath, and creating a durable seal. Once the resin is fully cured, we hand polish and assemble your piece for shipping. Each piece is handcrafted in our studio on Portland, Maine's working waterfront.

Where can I purchase CHART metalworks jewelry?

Purchases can be made at CHARTmetalworks.com, by contacting customer service at 207.221.6807 M-F 10AM-6PM EST or at a CHART metalworks authorized retailer.

Can I be notified when you launch new products?

We distribute email newsletters periodically containing new product announcements. You can sign up for our newsletter by entering your email address in the lower right hand corner of our website footer.

How are your pieces packaged?

All CHART metalworks pieces arrive in elegant gift boxes with take care instructions, Maine Made certificate and company information. Your packaging can be further personalized with recycled nautical chart Gift Wrap by selecting the service under ADDITIONAL OPTIONS on any product purchase page.

How do you ship?

CHART metalworks ships via USPS. Please see Shipping and Returns for additional information.

Do you ship to PO boxes?

Yes, CHART metalworks does ship to PO boxes.

Do you ship outside of the United States?

At this time CHART metalworks does not ship internationally unless to APO/FPO/DPO.

How can I pay for my order?

CHART metalworks accepts most major credits cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. Customers that have received an e-gift certificate can also redeem them at time of check out.

I just submitted an order. Can I cancel it?

Orders are processed as quickly as possible and, for this reason, cannot be canceled once they are submitted.

I just submitted an order. Can I change it?

CUSTOM PIECE orders can be changed until approval of your proof. Request the change by note within the proof approval forum prior to approving your proof. PETITE COLLECTION orders are processed as quickly as possible and, for this reason, cannot be changed once they are submitted.

I just submitted an order. When will my credit card be charged?

Credit cards are charged for full amount due at time of check out.

What is your return/exchange/refund policy?

Due to the custom nature of CUSTOM PIECES, all sales are final unless the item is defective due to the efforts of manufacturing. CUSTOM PIECES defective due to the efforts of manufacturing will be repaired/replaced free of charge. All returns must be pre-authorized and accompanied by a Return Authorization. Please see Shipping and Returns for additional CUSTOM PIECES return policies information and return shipping instructions. If for any reason you are not satisfied with your CHART metalworks PETITE COLLECTION piece, they are returnable for credit, exchange or refund to original purchaser within 60 calendar days of purchase. What is your repair policy?

We warranty all of our chains, findings and bezels against defects of the manufacturing process for one year from time of purchase and will repair/replace defective items free of charge within this timeframe. We do not warranty against excessive wear and tear, for example the chain is exposed to excessive force and breaks or the metal is exposed to harsh chemicals and adversely affected. We are not responsible for routine cleaning of the jewelry, please follow our take care instructions provided in the packaging and below. We are happy to repair items outside of the one year warranty or damaged due to excessive wear and tear for a small fee plus shipping and handling. All returns for repair must be pre-authorized and accompanied by a Return Authorization. Please see Shipping and Returns for additional repair policies and return shipping instructions.

How do I care for my CHART metalworks jewelry?

Sterling Silver, Bronze and Pewter all oxidize/tarnish/patina over time. Exposure to perfumes, lotions, hair products, perspiration and certain chemicals can accelerate this natural process. Apply any hair products and ensure any lotions and/or perfumes have absorbed into your skin before adorning your jewelry. Always remove your jewelry before showering, bathing, swimming, at the gym or working out and before bed. Please follow these instructions to care for your jewelry. Satin Finish Lead Free Pewter Designed to patina slowly and evenly, developing a soft warm patina often considered an enhancement to appearance. If desired, apply and rub a mild detergent on pewter surface, rinse under running water and gently wipe dry with a soft cloth. Satin Finish Bronze Designed to look only better with the patina of age and wear. If desired, apply and rub a small amount of Brasso cleaner, available at most grocery or hardware stores, on bronze surface, rinse under running water and gently wipe dry with a soft cloth. Satin Finish .925 Sterling Silver All sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time. This natural process can be slowed by storing in tarnish prevention cloths or bags in a cool, dry place. When worn continually, sterling silver often develops a lovely patina. If desired, apply and gently rub a small amount of white toothpaste on sterling silver surface, rinse under running water and gently wipe dry with a soft cloth. Boater’s Resin The clear, high gloss surface is a durable, scratch and fade resistant boater’s resin containing a U.V. protectant. If slightly scratched, buff with a soft cloth and car/boat wax.

Can I expose my CHART metalworks jewelry to water?

The image in your jewelry is sealed with a boater’s resin and will not be affected by water exposure. Sterling Silver, Bronze and Pewter all oxidize/tarnish/patina over time. Exposure to certain chemicals found in pools, salt water, shampoo and cleaning products can accelerate this natural process adversely affecting your jewelry over time and is not recommended. For best results, please remove your jewelry prior to swimming or bathing. If exposed, rinse under running water and pat dry with a soft cloth immediately. Do not expose any pieces made with leather to water, as it will be adversely affected. Do not wear your jewelry in chlorinated pools or sulfur baths.

What is a custom piece?

Our custom pieces are designed to feature your desired location and can be found in the CUSTOM PIECES section of our website. Due to the custom nature of CUSTOM PIECES, all sales are final unless the item is defective due to the efforts of manufacturing. What locations are available for custom map pieces?

Your piece is made-to-order for anywhere in the world. We have an extensive library of navigational documents available including but not limited to Nautical Charts, Topographical Maps, Road Maps, Vintage Maps and Historical Maps.

How long will it take to get my custom piece?

Turnaround times vary depending upon customer response times during proof approval, number of revision requests and expedited service and shipping option selections. Please expect a minimum of 1.5 weeks with expedited proof approval, service and shipping options to 4 weeks with standard orders. Please see Shipping and Returns for additional CUSTOM PIECES order processing and delivery timeframes. What if I do not like my custom piece proof?

We will initially provide aesthetically pleasing artwork of your desired location capturing the area and name recognition requested. Should you desire changes, request them by note by replying to the proof email and we will alter as necessary and resend. We will be able to capture the area requested with the name recognition requested and an aesthetically pleasing coloration scheme. We cannot always guarantee availability of specific coloration schemes or level of street detail maps will provide.

Can I see a custom piece proof before placing my order?

If you would like to see a proof prior to making a purchase there is a NON-REFUNDABLE $30 proof charge. Please call customer service at 207.221.6807 M-F 10AM-6PM EST and ask for a proof-only order. We will send you a proof image and edit as necessary. When you decide to move forward with your purchase, the $30 pre-paid proof charge will be applied to final cost.

What size should I order to best capture my custom piece location?

We can size any location to any sized piece we offer and adequately capture the area and name recognition requested. Should you decide during proof approval you would like a different size than ordered, simply request the change by note within our proof approval forum prior to approving your proof and we will update the order, resize the proof and credit/charge any difference to the original payment method.

Why doesn’t my custom piece imagery look like a Google Map?

Google maps are proprietary and therefore cannot be used in our products. Please do not place your order expecting the final result to look like Google.

Can I send you my own map to be used in a custom piece?

No. Unfortunately, due to our production process and potential copyright restrictions we cannot incorporate maps provided by customers.

What if the image in my custom piece doesn’t look like what I approved?

We recommend that you take another look at the image approved. We are tight on quality control, but if you feel certain the image approved is not the image received, please call customer service at 207.221.6807 M-F 10AM-6PM EST. We will review the proof approval and print files and if determined a mistake was made due to the efforts of manufacturing, we will repair/replace your piece free of charge. All returns must be pre-authorized and accompanied by a Return Authorization. How do I order the same custom piece image/location I ordered last time?

Enter in the LOCATION NOTES field the location and name the original order was placed under. All customer images are kept on file by first and last name. A proof image will still be sent for approval to ensure accuracy.

If I lose an earring/cuff link can I have a match made?

Yes. Please call customer service at 207.221.6807 M-F 10AM-6PM EST. There is a charge for the replacement piece and shipping and handling.
